Workers in Piedecuesta and Zarumilla hold protests over infrastructure concerns

Workers in Piedecuesta, Colombia, have organized a protest for October 30 to demand oversight and guarantees for essential services. Represented by the Sintraemdes union, employees allege infrastructure deterioration and financial irregularities within the Piedecuestana de Servicios Públicos company. Specific concerns include the El Santuario wastewater treatment plant, which reportedly has not functioned properly for nearly three years, potentially leading to contaminated discharges into the Rio de Oro. Additionally, workers cited issues with drinking water chlorination and the poor condition of garbage collection vehicles.

In Zarumilla, judicial workers have staged a demonstration against the relocation of civil and criminal modules to new premises. The union argues that the proposed buildings lack adequate security, accessibility for people with disabilities, and proper health and safety certifications. While workers expressed support for the implementation of a new flagrancy module pilot program, they maintain that the current relocation plan involves facilities that are insufficient for both staff and public users.
