Workers' Party leads Brazilian political parties in debt to the Union

Data from the Attorney General of the National Treasury reveals that the Workers' Party (PT), led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, holds the highest debt to the Brazilian Union, totaling R$ 24.5 million. Approximately 70% of this amount, or R$ 16.5 million, consists of social security debts. The PT's state directory in Rio Grande do Sul accounts for the largest single portion of this debt, at R$ 15 million.

The Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB) ranks second with R$ 14 million in outstanding payments, followed by the PRD (R$ 6.5 million), PDT (R$ 5 million), and the Liberal Party (PL) in sixth place with R$ 3 million. The PSDB has contested the charges, arguing that its directories maintain administrative and financial autonomy and claiming that debts attributed to the national directory are prescribed.

The survey examined the 50 largest individual debts among national, state, and municipal party directories, with liabilities ranging from R$ 400,000 to R$ 15 million.
