Workers report overqualification as a barrier to employment
A report from Monster reveals that 40% of workers believe being overqualified has cost them employment opportunities. Additionally, 45% of respondents expressed concern that their extensive experience might work against them during the hiring process.
This trend is influencing how candidates present themselves. Approximately 57% of workers stated they would remove experience from their resumes if it doubled their chances of being hired, while 43% have already downplayed or removed aspects of their professional background, such as graduation dates, advanced degrees, or senior job titles.
Workers attribute employer hesitation to concerns regarding retention and compensation. Specifically, 36% believe employers fear overqualified candidates will leave for better opportunities, and 35% believe employers assume they will demand higher pay. Some workers are intentionally seeking roles below their experience level to achieve better work-life balance, reduce stress, or find greater job stability.
