Workers survive separate burial incidents in Peru and Guatemala

Two separate incidents involving workers being buried alive were reported in Peru and Guatemala.

In Ventanilla, Callao, a 33-year-old construction worker named Ananías Bardales Mendo survived after being trapped approximately three meters underground. The accident occurred on Friday morning when a nearby house collapsed, burying him under sand, wood, and debris. Emergency teams, including the General Firefighters Corps, the Special Operations Group (GOES), and Serenazgo, conducted a complex rescue operation. Bardales was rescued alive around midday and taken for medical evaluation. Authorities noted that the area contains many wooden structures built on sandy terrain.

In Guatemala, a worker was buried while performing tasks inside a trench on the national route to Totonicapán at kilometer 198.5. Local residents assisted volunteer firefighters from the 42nd Company in rescuing the man. He was provided with pre-hospital care and subsequently transported alive to the Hospital Departamental. The specific cause of the collapse and the duration the worker remained underground were not immediately specified.
