Workforce retention and culture identified as key to solving healthcare shortages

Workforce challenges in the aged care and nursing sectors are increasingly being viewed as issues of retention and organizational culture rather than just recruitment. While recent decisions by the Fair Work Commission to increase award wages by 4.75 per cent are significant, data suggests that pay alone does not ensure long-term staff stability.

In the aged care sector, factors such as leadership, team relationships, and sense of purpose are critical to keeping employees. For example, the Medical and Aged Care Group reported an employee engagement rate of 72 per cent and a retention rate of 77 per cent, both of which exceed sector benchmarks.

Experts suggest that healthcare staffing shortages are often the result of long-term workforce strategy issues, including educational capacity and changing career preferences, rather than immediate hiring failures. Addressing these challenges requires looking beyond filling vacancies to understanding the systemic factors that influence the workforce pipeline.
