American voters express deep distrust of political promises to working class

Recent polling and analysis indicate deep skepticism among American voters regarding political promises made to the working class. According to a Politico poll, 55% of Americans believe politicians who claim to support the working class are primarily motivated by winning elections. This distrust is widespread, affecting majorities of voters who supported both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. Notably, only 25% of Americans who self-identify as working class believe politicians have a genuine desire to help them.

Pew Research Center data shows that 60% of U.S. adults now identify as working class, a rise from 54% in 2024. Identification is higher among Republicans (67%) than Democrats (55%).

Both major political parties face challenges in securing this demographic. Among those identifying as working class, 38% believe Democrats best represent their interests, while 32% favor Republicans. Democrats are currently debating whether moderate or progressive strategies are more effective for reconnecting with these voters, while Republicans continue to leverage working-class support as a core part of their coalition.
