Working People United inaugurates Lagos chapter to support Tinubu

Working People United (WoPU), a political support group for President Bola Tinubu, has inaugurated its Lagos State chapter. The group, which includes members from various trade unions such as the National Union of Road Transport Workers and the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, aims to support Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 and Obafemi Hamzat’s bid for the Lagos State governorship.

National Coordinator Akporeha Williams stated that the group is establishing structures across Nigeria, having already inaugurated chapters in Kano, Katsina, Delta, and Osun. Williams clarified that the gathering was intended to build organizational structure rather than serve as a campaign rally.

In response to the inauguration, some leaders within the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) issued a directive for affiliates to boycott the event. WoPU has rejected this directive, labeling it “anti-democratic” and a violation of workers’ constitutional rights to freedom of association as guaranteed under Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria. The group maintains that its political choices are legitimate and protected by law.
