Workplace accidents rise in Cantabria while Galicia sees declines

Workplace accident statistics in Spain show divergent trends across the regions of Cantabria and Galicia. In Cantabria, the Instituto Cántabro de Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo (ICASST) reported a 4.3% increase in occupational accidents with medical leave through July, totaling 4,178 incidents. Notably, workplace fatalities in the region more than tripled, rising from two to seven. While serious accidents decreased by 25%, minor accidents rose by 4.4%. The service sector recorded the highest number of accidents, followed by industry and construction.

In contrast, Galicia has seen a significant reduction in workplace accidents during the first half of the year, marking the third-largest decline in Spain. Despite this improvement, the region still recorded 12,709 incidents through June, averaging one accident every 20 minutes. Fatalities in Galicia decreased by approximately 20%, with 19 deaths reported in the first semester. Nationally, falls remain a leading cause of incidents, and authorities continue to emphasize the mandatory use of safety equipment for work performed at heights.
