Workplace burnout: recognizing symptoms and causes
Workplace burnout is characterized by a gradual accumulation of exhaustion, frustration, and loss of motivation, rather than occurring suddenly. It is distinguished from general fatigue by a deep sense of cynicism toward one's role and a perceived loss of utility.
Physical warning signs include persistent fatigue, frequent headaches, sleep disturbances, muscle pain, digestive issues, and weakened immune systems. Psychological and behavioral indicators include increased irritability, lack of concentration, memory issues, social withdrawal, and anticipatory anxiety. In some cases, individuals may continue working but operate on ‘autopilot’.
Common causes include prolonged high workloads, unclear or contradictory objectives, lack of recognition, and feeling undervalued by colleagues or superiors. Environmental factors, such as poor lighting, inadequate furniture, or visual clutter, can also contribute to increased cognitive load and exacerbate the condition.
