Workplace design strategies for neurodiversity and noise reduction
Effective workplace design can significantly improve productivity and support neurodivergent employees by reducing unnecessary environmental barriers. For neurodivergent individuals—including those with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, or dyspraxia—factors such as noisy open-plan offices, implied deadline changes, or excessive video meetings can lead to stress, disengagement, and psychological injury risk.
Rather than focusing solely on individual disclosure, employers are encouraged to prioritize work design. This includes creating clear priorities, providing written follow-ups, and establishing fair adjustment processes. Improving office acoustics is also a key component of a productive environment. Identifying noise sources like conversations, equipment, and echoes allows businesses to implement solutions such as sound-absorbing materials and better room layouts to minimize distractions.
