Workplace IT usage and WhatsApp transcription features
Experts are highlighting the legal and security implications of using company-owned devices for private purposes. According to ARAG expert Tobias Klingelhöfer, employees should not assume private use of work phones or laptops is permitted, as such usage is governed by employment contracts, IT guidelines, or specific employer instructions. Unauthorized installation of private software can pose significant security risks, potentially introducing malware into corporate networks.
In a related context of workplace safety, employers are legally obligated under the German Civil Code to maintain environments that protect employee health, including proper hygiene and air quality.
Separately, WhatsApp has introduced a transcription feature that allows users to read voice messages as text. On iPhones running iOS 16 or later with Siri enabled, the transcription occurs locally on the device. While available for several languages on Android, German support for Android users is currently in beta and expected soon.
