Workplace emotions and mental health strategies
Research conducted by Jose Navarro and colleagues from the University of Barcelona highlights the significant impact of emotions on workplace behavior and performance. A study involving 102 workers across various sectors analyzed 1,499 reports of work-related events to track six basic emotions: happiness, surprise, sadness, disgust, fear, and anger.
The findings indicate that happiness is the most frequent and intense emotion, appearing in 67 percent of reported events, followed by surprise at 54 percent. While negative emotions like anger (nearly 40 percent) and sadness (32 percent) occur less frequently, they are highly impactful, with sadness reducing performance and anger often leading to conflict.
To support overall mental well-being, experts suggest several lifestyle adjustments. Key recommendations include maintaining a healthy diet, consuming dark chocolate to stimulate mood-enhancing neurochemicals, reducing alcohol intake to lower stress and anxiety, and ensuring adequate sleep and rest.
