Workplace fitness: Integrating movement into the office routine

Integrating physical activity into the workday is becoming increasingly important to combat the health challenges posed by prolonged sitting. Various office-based fitness solutions are available, ranging from compact under-desk models to full-sized standing elliptical trainers.

Under-desk crosstrainers are noted for being space-efficient, requiring less than 0.5 square meters, and can burn between 150 and 300 calories per hour. These models typically cost between 100 and 400 euros. In contrast, standing elliptical trainers require significantly more space (1.5 to 3 square meters) and higher investment (600 to 3000 euros) but offer higher caloric expenditure of 300 to 700 calories per hour.

Despite the availability of health information and ergonomic tools, many employees struggle to implement healthy habits at work. Psychological and social barriers, such as high workloads, the fear of being judged by colleagues, and the pressure to maintain constant productivity in open-plan offices, often prevent individuals from taking necessary movement breaks or using adjustable desks.
