Workplace health insurance premiums projected to rise significantly
Workplace health insurance premiums are projected to see significant increases, with some estimates suggesting a rise of over 11% in 2027 if no cost-saving measures are implemented. According to a preview of WTW’s forthcoming survey, such a jump would represent the highest yearly increase on record. Other consulting firms, including Aon and the Business Group on Health, have projected similar growth rates between 9.2% and 9.5%.
To manage these rising expenses, many employers are planning to shift more costs to their employees. By 2028, more than 70% of employers anticipate making changes that will increase out-of-pocket healthcare expenses for their workforce. Key drivers for these rising costs include the increasing prevalence of chronic conditions and cancer among working-age Americans, skyrocketing prescription drug prices, and general medical care inflation related to procedures and provider pay.
On a local level, Sarasota County Schools is facing similar pressures. District officials have proposed a premium increase for the next calendar year to combat medical and pharmacy cost inflation, which is expected to climb by up to 12%. The district has seen medical spending increase by approximately $30 million since 2021, leading to shifts in how staff enroll in benefit plans.
