Workplace mental health: Burnout and caregiver support challenges in France

Recent studies in France highlight significant challenges regarding mental health and burnout in the workplace. A study conducted by teale and Ipsos bva among 1,000 employees reveals that 55% show signs of burnout according to the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI). Paradoxically, two-thirds of these individuals believe their mental health is good, illustrating the progressive and often unconscious nature of professional exhaustion.

While 58% of managers report having had at least one team member experience burnout in the last two years, only 21% claim to be able to identify the early warning signs. Managers note that burnout negatively impacts workload, motivation, and team cohesion, yet they feel ill-equipped to intervene.

Additionally, a white paper by ISES involving 116 organizations indicates that while employers perceive a higher mental health risk for employees who are caregivers compared to those with disabilities, support systems remain insufficient. Only 36% of organizations have formalized agreements for caregivers, compared to 72% for disability. Many companies struggle to identify the number of caregivers they employ and lack structured support mechanisms, despite recognizing the potential impact on mental equilibrium.
