Workplace mental health: Understanding rust-out and stress management
Workplace mental health can manifest not only as burnout from excessive pressure but also as ‘rust-out’. Rust-out is a state of occupational stagnation characterized by boredom, a lack of challenge, and a gradual loss of interest. Unlike burnout, where an individual feels overwhelmed by too many tasks, those experiencing rust-out may remain functional and complete their duties but feel intellectually understimulated and unengaged.
To manage work-related stress and transition effectively into personal time, several habits are recommended. Creating an after-work ritual, such as a walk or changing clothes, can signal the end of the workday to the brain. Other strategies include dedicating time for decompression, engaging in physical activity like stretching or walking, and reducing screen time in favor of activities like reading or cooking. Maintaining a predictable evening routine and discussing concerns with trusted individuals can also help reduce anxiety.
