Workplace productivity and transition challenges after summer holidays

As employees return to the office following summer holidays, businesses face challenges regarding both physical workspace preparation and employee cognitive adjustment.

From a facility management perspective, maintaining office hygiene and environment is critical for motivation. Empty or underutilized office spaces can accumulate dust, germs, and humidity issues. According to a 2022 study by the Institute for Facility Management (IFMA), 68 percent of employees state that workplace cleanliness directly influences their satisfaction and performance.

On an individual level, employees often experience a cognitive lag when transitioning from vacation to work routines. Brain researcher Professor Jon Sigurd Wegener of the Copenhagen Business School notes that it is natural for the brain to require several hours or even days to readjust to the pace of professional life. To mitigate stress, experts recommend prioritizing accumulated tasks and working in dedicated time blocks to manage the mental load of returning to a high-demand environment.
