Workplace accidents in Brazil can trigger legal consequences across labor, social security, and civil law sectors. An accident is defined as an occurrence during professional activity that results in bodily injury, functional changes, or the loss or reduction of work capacity. This definition extends to occupational diseases and commuting accidents.

A critical component of the process is the Communication of Work Accident (CAT). While companies are responsible for this registration, workers, dependents, unions, or medical authorities can also file it if an employer refuses or delays. If incapacity lasts more than 15 consecutive days, workers may apply for temporary disability benefits through the National Social Security Institute (INSS).

Safety measures, such as Daily Safety Dialogues (DDS), are vital for prevention. For instance, work performed at heights of more than two meters—governed by NR-35—accounts for approximately 40% of workplace accidents in Brazil. These safety briefings allow teams to discuss risk analysis, equipment inspection, and weather conditions to mitigate hazards.
