Workplace silent fatigue linked to high job demands and hyperconnectivity

The phenomenon of ‘silent fatigue’ in the workplace is rising, driven by high workloads, hyperconnectivity, and a lack of adequate breaks. This exhaustion often stems from mental demands, constant digital notifications, and the blurring of boundaries between professional and personal life.

According to an International Labour Organization (ILO) report from April 2026, psychosocial risks such as high job demands, long hours, low autonomy, and job insecurity are linked to over 840,000 deaths annually and significant loss of healthy life years due to work-related disabilities. For businesses, this manifests as decreased productivity, increased errors, absenteeism, and higher staff turnover.

The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that chronic stress can trigger anxiety, irritability, physical pain, and sleep disorders. A 2025 study involving teachers in Santa Elena, Ecuador, highlighted these issues, finding that 65% of participants felt work demands exceeded their capacity, leading to fatigue and concentration problems.
