Workplace stress and declining standards impact European productivity
Organizational challenges in the workplace are manifesting through declining performance standards and rising mental health risks. In some companies, previously high-performing businesses are experiencing a gradual erosion of standards, often misattributed to poor employee morale when the root causes lie in failing organizational frameworks and leadership gaps.
Simultaneously, structural workplace stress is creating significant economic and health burdens. According to the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA), 45 percent of employees in Europe face psychological risks at work, with 44 percent reporting intense time pressure or overload. The OSH-Pulse 2025 report indicates that 29 percent of EU workers experience work-related stress, depression, or anxiety.
The economic impact is substantial; calculations by the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) suggest that work-related depression costs the EU over 100 billion euros annually due to absenteeism, lost productivity, and healthcare expenditures.
