Workplace studies reveal declining job motivation and management errors
New research highlights shifting attitudes toward work and management misconceptions regarding employee motivation.
A study published in Organization Science by researchers from Northeastern University and Cornell University reveals that managers often mistake intrinsic motivation for unlimited capacity. In laboratory experiments, 74 percent of managers assigned additional tasks to employees they perceived as highly motivated. However, this extra workload distracted from primary duties, resulting in only 31 percent of those employees successfully earning their performance bonuses.
Separately, a YouGov survey for HDI Deutschland indicates a significant decline in professional identification among German workers. Approximately 59 percent of respondents reported working primarily for financial reasons, a 17 percentage point increase from the previous year. The survey found that 54 percent of workers aged 15 to 54 and 63 percent of those aged 55 to 64 would stop working immediately if they were no longer financially dependent on employment.
