Workplace trends show rise in Sunday labor and constant connectivity
A growing phenomenon described by Microsoft as the ‘infinite workday’ is seeing professional tasks spill into weekends. Data indicates that office workers are interrupted every two minutes on average by meetings, emails, or messages. Consequently, chat messages sent outside of standard business hours have increased by 15% over the past year, averaging 58 per user.
A survey by Owl Labs involving 2,000 professionals in the United States found that nearly half of respondents work on Sundays. Specifically, 21% work most or all of the day, while 24% work for several hours. Another 11% report checking messages on Sundays.
Some professionals utilize Sundays to find uninterrupted time for deep work, as the standard workweek is often fragmented by frequent meetings and constant digital requests. While some view this ‘microshifting’ as a way to gain flexibility, others report significant fatigue and pressure due to the inability to disconnect.
