Workplace wellness shifts from benefit programs to integrated culture

Experts and business leaders are highlighting a shift in workplace wellness from standalone benefit programs to integrated organizational systems. At ATB Financial, Tara Lockyer emphasizes that wellness must be ingrained into the company culture to ensure psychological safety, rather than being a ‘bolted on’ strategy. The organization’s approach covers social, mental, and financial assistance, with over half of its portfolio dedicated to proactive initiatives.

Melanie Fuller of Alberta Blue Cross notes that while many companies intend to support employee wellbeing, they often struggle to move beyond a ‘program mindset’ focused on individual-focused initiatives. To be effective, wellbeing must be embedded into everyday decision-making and supported through shared accountability.

Furthering this discussion, addiction recovery coach David Mahler points to a critical gap between the availability of resources and their actual usage. He suggests that personal crises, such as substance use disorders or mental health challenges, often manifest in the workplace through absenteeism or declining performance. The effectiveness of wellness programs may depend on whether employees feel comfortable enough to seek help before a situation reaches a breaking point.
