Workplaces shift from annual reviews to continuous performance management
Workplaces are increasingly shifting from traditional annual performance reviews toward continuous performance management (CPM). This model replaces high-stakes, once-a-year meetings with an ongoing cycle of goal setting, frequent feedback, coaching, and development.
Traditional annual reviews often suffer from structural flaws, such as recall bias, where recent events overshadow the entire year, and a lack of timeliness that prevents immediate course correction. In contrast, continuous feedback allows for quicker interventions and more relevant goal adjustments as priorities shift.
Implementing CPM requires a shift in management philosophy, moving from grading past performance to coaching current work. While digital tools can support the process, the transition relies on managers and employees establishing new habits, such as regular check-ins and maintaining records of ongoing growth to avoid the pitfalls of memory-based evaluations.
