Workslop: The impact of unverified AI content in professional environments
Researchers from BetterUp Labs and the Stanford Social Media Lab have identified a phenomenon known as ‘workslop’, which refers to AI-generated content that is passed on to others without proper review, correction, or contextualization.
This issue can manifest in unedited generic emails, reports with irrelevant information, presentations lacking original analysis, or untested AI-produced code. While AI can accelerate initial production, the lack of human oversight can lead to superficial conclusions or outdated data.
A 2025 study indicated that 41% of surveyed workers reported encountering workslop that impacted their tasks. Workers estimated spending approximately two hours to resolve each occurrence of such content.
