World Animal Day and commemorations for deceased pets

World Animal Day, an initiative originally proposed in Berlin and officially established in 1931, continues to serve as a global platform for animal welfare. The day, held annually on October 4, honors the patron saint of animals, Saint Francis of Assisi. Today, the movement is coordinated from Cheltenham, England, involving ambassadors in over 70 countries through various activities such as webinars and exhibitions.

In addition to global awareness days, specific observances like the Day of Deceased Pets allow animal welfare organizations to reflect on the impact of animals in human lives. In Austria, Tierschutz Austria holds candlelit commemorations for animals that never found homes and those that passed away in shelters. These moments also serve to honor historical figures in the animal welfare movement, such as Dr. Ignaz Franz Castelli, who founded the Vienna Animal Protection Association 180 years ago.
