World Aquatics allows Russian athletes to compete under national flag
World Aquatics has reinstated the ability for Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under their own flags and national anthems in international competitions. This decision, which was previously applied to junior and youth categories, now extends to senior athletes as of September 1.
European Aquatics President Antonio Silva confirmed that the continental federation is bound by the World Aquatics ruling, which mandates full participation for Russian athletes in European competitions. Silva met with Dmitry Mazepin, head of the Russian Water Sports Federation, to discuss the implementation of these new rules.
The decision has drawn significant criticism, particularly in Poland. Otylia Jędrzejczak, President of the Polish Swimming Federation, has expressed strong opposition, noting that she cannot imagine hosting Russian citizens at the upcoming European Championships in Rzeszów.
In response to the policy, European Aquatics stated it will not organize international tournaments in countries that restrict visas for Russian athletes. While most competition venues through 2028 are already confirmed, the 2028 European Championships remain an exception, as host governments must provide guarantees that Russian athletes will receive visas.
