Ahead of the November World Architecture Festival (WAF), several shortlisted projects for the 2026 awards are being highlighted for their focus on integrating with the natural environment and minimizing ecological footprints.

Key projects include the Ayalam boutique resort in Kerala, India, designed by Aslam Sham Architects. The semi-underground structure uses a living roof with endemic vegetation to provide thermal insulation and reduce cooling needs during tropical summers. In China, Lacime Architects designed The Mountain Fold, a visitor and community center located in the foothills of the UNESCO World Heritage site, Mount Emei. The design follows the natural terrain to minimize earthworks and connect locals with visitors.

Other notable entries include a market roof in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula designed to harvest rainwater, and a project in Iceland involving the restoration of Viking-era ruins using chemical-free wood.
