Budapest hosts inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship

The inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship is taking place in Budapest, Hungary, from September 11 to 13, 2026. This new biennial event is designed to be a high-stakes, television-friendly showcase of the world's elite track and field athletes, including Olympic and World champions, as well as Diamond League winners.

Organized by World Athletics, the competition features a massive $10 million total prize pool, with individual event winners receiving $150,000. Unlike traditional championships, winners receive trophies rather than medals. The event includes 28 disciplines, though some traditional events like the shot put and discus have been excluded to maintain a fast-paced format.

Global stars such as Marileidy Paulino, Miltos Tentoglou, and Marcell Jacobs are among the competitors. The championship aims to increase the commercial appeal and viewership of athletics by focusing on a condensed, high-impact schedule of three evening sessions.
