Budapest to host inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship

The inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship is set to take place in Budapest, Hungary, from September 11 to 13, 2026. This new biennial event aims to redefine athletics by featuring an exclusive field of Olympic and world champions, Diamond League winners, and top-ranked athletes. The competition will offer a condensed, high-stakes program with a total prize pool of US$10 million.

Key athletes participating include Botswana’s Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo, who returns to Budapest following the loss of his mother, and Zimbabwe’s Makanakaishe Charamba. Other notable competitors include Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi, Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan, and Australia’s Eleanor Patterson. However, some stars such as Noah Lyles and Tara Davis-Woodhall will miss the event due to injury or illness.

The championship introduces several innovative elements, including a black stadium infield to enhance visual contrast for viewers and a streamlined schedule designed to minimize downtime and maximize direct duels between top performers.
