Middle East economies face contraction amid Iran war and energy disruptions

The ongoing conflict involving Iran is causing significant economic disruption across the Middle East. The World Bank projects that the six economies of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) will contract by an average of 4.3% this year. While oil prices have risen, they have failed to offset declining export volumes, which has negatively impacted production and public revenues.

Energy supplies are also facing volatility. QatarEnergy has extended its force majeure notice until early December, affecting approximately 4.6 billion cubic meters of gas destined for Italy's Adriatic LNG terminal. Additionally, Middle East airline passenger traffic saw a 14.6% decline in August compared to the previous year.

In Iran, the situation is critical. The country is facing a daily shortage of roughly 10 million liters of gasoline and severe currency instability. The Iranian Oil Minister, Mohsen Paknejad, has resigned amid collapsing oil exports and high inflation. Furthermore, major border crossings like Bazargan and Rimdan are experiencing massive congestion, with approximately 8,000 trucks currently stalled, causing significant delays to regional trade.
