World Bank invests $750 million in Portuguese-speaking African nations
The World Bank, through its private sector arm the International Finance Corporation (IFC), has $750 million in projects targeting Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP). During the 2nd Lusophone Africa Business Forum in Cape Verde, IFC officials identified agribusiness, tourism, and logistics as primary sectors for driving economic growth and employment.
Sameh Wahba, IFC regional director for West Africa and the Sahel, noted that agribusiness and tourism are focal points due to their capacity to create jobs through small producer integration and multiplier effects. Cláudia da Conceição, IFC regional director for Southern Africa, emphasized that the forum helps consolidate a market that has historically been fragmented compared to Francophone African markets.
In addition to these sectors, infrastructure and energy remain essential priorities for growth. Recent business developments have been particularly noted in the agribusiness sectors of Mozambique and Angola.
