World Bank report shows 811 million people living in extreme poverty
The World Bank Group’s Poverty, Prosperity, and Planet Report reveals that over 811 million people, or 1 in 10 globally, continue to live on less than US$3.00 a day. This rate of extreme poverty has remained unchanged since 2019.
More than half of the world's extreme poor reside in just nine economies. Projections suggest that by 2030, over 87 percent of these individuals will be located in Sub-Saharan Africa or in areas characterized by fragility and conflict. The report warns that without stronger per capita growth, poverty levels in 2030 could exceed current figures.
Additionally, nearly 3.7 billion people live on less than US$8.30 a day, leaving much of humanity vulnerable to economic shocks. Climate-related hazards pose a significant threat, as over a billion people in high-risk areas lack the social protection or infrastructure necessary to withstand environmental changes.
