World Bank reports massive inflation gap in Northern Cyprus

A World Bank report titled ‘Navigating Challenging Conditions: Managing Inflation and Uncertainty’ highlights a massive economic disparity on the island of Cyprus. According to the 2026 report, inflation in Northern Cyprus is projected to average approximately 40 percent for the 2025-2026 period, compared to roughly 1 percent in the south.

Economists attribute this gap to several factors, including the Turkish Lira, exchange rate fluctuations, energy prices, and broader economic volatility in Turkey. Additionally, local dynamics are driving costs higher, with residents in the north paying 2.4 times more for the same imported goods as those in the south.

Specific sectors are seeing even higher price increases, with education inflation projected at 66.6 percent and healthcare at 54.2 percent between January 2025 and August 2026. Other economic indicators show slowing growth, increasing budget deficits, declining investments, and a youth unemployment rate of 15.7 percent.
