World Bank unveils $3.5 bn investment strategy for Mexico
World Bank President Ajay Banga visited Mexico and announced a new five‑year cooperation framework, the “Plan Mexico”. The plan targets a portfolio of more than US$3.5 billion, with a focus on mobilising private‑sector capital to create quality jobs and boost economic growth.
Key priority sectors include infrastructure, energy, water, health and human‑capital development. The bank will provide risk‑mitigation tools such as political‑risk guarantees and mechanisms to resolve disputes between firms and governments. A special emphasis will be placed on micro, small and medium‑sized enterprises, aiming to formalise informal businesses and improve access to credit.
The strategy aims to raise Mexico’s GDP growth to above 3 % by 2030 and position the country to benefit from its integration with the United States and Canada under the USMCA trade pact.
