Punjab and World Bank to implement digital tax systems
The Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA) and the World Bank have agreed to implement advanced digital systems to expand the tax base and enhance revenue collection in Punjab. This initiative aims to modernize the provincial tax system through the use of digital databases and data analytics, aligning with international best practices.
During meetings between PRA Chairman Moazzam Iqbal Sipra and a World Bank delegation, officials discussed the Digital Economy Enhancement Project. The proposed reforms intend to use digital tools to identify tax evasion, misappropriation, and discrepancies in business records. By integrating data from various government departments, the PRA seeks to build a more effective collection system that cross-references records rather than relying solely on taxpayer-submitted data.
To support these reforms, the PRA and the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) will collaborate on a working plan for digital tax reforms, utilizing technical and financial assistance from the World Bank to develop a practical roadmap.
