World Bank funds $250 million development program for northern Mozambique

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has launched the MozCommunity project, a $250 million initiative funded by the World Bank aimed at developing northern Mozambique. The eight-year program, running until 2034, will be implemented by the Integrated Development Agency of the North (ADIN) across 56 districts in the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Niassa, and Nampula.

The project is divided into two phases. The first phase involves a $100 million investment targeting 80 priority localities, while the remaining $150 million will be released in subsequent years based on institutional performance. The initiative focuses on three core areas: strengthening collaboration between the state and local communities, promoting economic opportunities and employment—specifically for women and youth—and building climate-resilient infrastructure.

Planned interventions include improving access roads, constructing schools, health centers, and water supply systems, and building a reference hospital in Cabo Delgado. The program seeks to stabilize the gas-rich northern region, which has been impacted by terrorist activity and natural disasters such as floods.
