World Breastfeeding Week promotes health and sustainability
World Breastfeeding Week is observed from October 1 to October 7, aiming to support mothers and raise awareness about the health and environmental benefits of breastfeeding. The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, followed by continued breastfeeding alongside complementary foods for up to two years or more.
Beyond health benefits for mother and child, breastfeeding is noted for its lower ecological footprint compared to artificial infant formula. Research indicates that the production and use of formula can lead to significantly higher CO2 emissions.
In Italy, specifically within the Modena province, local health authorities including Ausl di Modena and the University Hospital of Modena are organizing various initiatives. These include educational events and a collective flash mob titled ‘Allattiamo insieme’ scheduled for October 3 in various squares and health facilities to promote the support network available to families.
