World Cleanup Day 2026 aims to transform plastic waste into a circular resource
More than 20 million people across over 190 countries are set to participate in World Cleanup Day 2026 to combat plastic waste. While the event focuses on cleaning up debris, experts emphasize that long-term solutions require transitioning plastic from a disposable waste product into a sustainable resource within a circular economy.
Dominic Fiel, Executive Director of the Vienna-based Plastic is Fantastic Association (PiFA), argues that the material itself is not the problem, but rather its improper use and disposal. PiFA is working to foster a cultural shift toward more intelligent material use and closed-loop systems.
On the industrial side, Günther Klammer, CTO of Next Generation Recyclingmaschinen (NGR), notes that while recycling technologies are advanced enough to turn post-consumer waste into high-quality secondary raw materials, economic hurdles remain. Klammer points out that it is currently not more cost-effective to recycle plastic than it is to produce new plastic, calling for political action to address these economic disparities.
