World Cleanup Day 2026 drives environmental action in Nigeria and Ghana

In observance of World Cleanup Day 2026, authorities and community organizations in Nigeria and Ghana have called for increased individual responsibility regarding waste management and environmental health.

In Lagos, Nigeria, the State Government emphasized that achieving a cleaner city requires daily habits such as reducing food waste and sorting garbage at the source. Officials highlighted a circular economy strategy intended to transform waste into economic resources and green jobs, noting that government intervention must be supported by multi-sector partnerships involving schools, NGOs, and businesses.

In Ghana, the Ghana Scout Association partnered with the High Commission of India, Mayekoo, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for a cleanup exercise at Ananse Beach in Accra. The initiative focused on linking environmental cleanliness to public health and civic dignity. Indian High Commissioner Surinder Bhagat connected the efforts to India’s Swachh Bharat campaign, promoting the concept of contributing physical labor toward social and environmental causes.
