World Coconut Day celebrates the global importance of the coconut

World Coconut Day is observed annually on September 2 to recognize the nutritional, economic, and cultural importance of the coconut. Spearheaded by the International Coconut Community (ICC), the global event highlights the versatility of the fruit, often referred to as the ‘Tree of Life’ because nearly every part of the plant can provide food, water, shelter, or fuel.

India is a major player in the global market, projected to be the world’s largest producer by 2026, contributing over 30% of global production. Within India, Tamil Nadu is the leading producer, while Kerala holds the largest area of land under cultivation.

In the culinary sector, the day is celebrated through various traditional recipes. In Brazil, the ingredient is a staple in confectionery, used in diverse preparations ranging from traditional coconut cakes to chocolate-coconut combinations like ‘prestígio’.
