World Cotton Day commemorates the global impact of cotton

World Cotton Day is observed annually on October 7 to raise awareness regarding the role of cotton in global trade, economic development, and poverty alleviation. The initiative was originally proposed in 2019 by the ‘Cotton Four’—Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, and Mali—to the World Trade Organization.

The United Nations General Assembly officially recognized the day on August 30, 2021, through Resolution A/RES/75/318. The celebration highlights cotton as a vital natural fiber that provides both food and textile materials, supports employment in developing nations, and offers a biodegradable alternative to synthetic fibers.
