World Cup 2026 cyber scams target fans with fake streaming sites and public Wi‑Fi hacks

Cybersecurity experts warn that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will become a prime target for online fraud. Specialist Gonzalo Carrasco says the massive crowds at stadiums will drive users to seek public Wi‑Fi, which attackers can mimic using directional antennas that broadcast fake signals up to 10 km away. He advises using a VPN, avoiding financial transactions on public networks, and disabling NFC and Bluetooth before connecting.

Kaspersky research highlights a parallel threat: fraudulent streaming pages that copy legitimate sports‑broadcast sites. These pages lure fans with promises of free, high‑quality live matches, then harvest personal and banking data or install malware. The firm recommends only accessing official platforms, checking URLs carefully, and not downloading unknown apps or extensions. Updated security software can also block such deceptive sites.

Both warnings underline the need for heightened vigilance by millions of viewers who will be searching for live coverage during the tournament.
