World Cup 2026 Fraud Surge Targets Fans with Sticker and Streaming Scams
Cybercriminals are exploiting the excitement around the 2026 FIFA World Cup to run a wave of online fraud. A Kaspersky analysis found 164 fraudulent domains linked to the tournament, including 139 that impersonated the official Panini sticker album brand. Scammers lure users with fake sticker collections, counterfeit tickets and pirate‑streaming sites that install malicious software or steal banking credentials.
The scams have intensified with the rise of instant‑payment services. Pix, Brazil’s rapid‑transfer system, is frequently used to obtain payments that are hard to reverse. A NordVPN survey reported that 34% of Brazilian internet users encountered World Cup‑related fraud in 2024‑2025, up from 19% during the previous tournament cycle. Procon‑SP logged 238 consumer complaints between March and May 2026, a sharp rise driven by missed deliveries, deceptive offers and counterfeit merchandise. Social platforms such as Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook and TikTok remain the primary channels for these fraudulent schemes.
