World Cup 2026 Legal Betting Opens in New York Amid High Stadium Food Prices

Betting on the 2026 FIFA World Cup is legal for New York residents who are at least 21 years old and physically present in the state. Licensed mobile sportsbooks, authorized since 2022, must verify age and location through geolocation technology before allowing wagers on matches, including those involving Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and the United States.

At the tournament’s venues, food and drink costs are notably high. In Los Angeles stadium, a beer runs US$15‑22, soda US$7.75 and a basic meal with a drink exceeds US$32. In Toronto, a hot‑dog and soda combo costs CAD 57.50, while a burger and beer reach CAD 25.25 and CAD 24.25 respectively. Analysts note that such prices, added to travel and accommodation expenses, could deter average fans, especially those already facing steep travel costs. FIFA reports over six million tickets sold, but some seats remain empty, partly due to corporate packages and the elevated in‑stadium pricing.
