World Cup 2026: Qatar Secures Late Draw with Switzerland as Opening Ceremony Highlights Global Celebration

In the group stage match at Santa Clara, Qatar scored a winning goal in the 90+4 minute to force a 1‑1 draw against Switzerland. The only earlier goal came from a penalty by Empoli in the 17th minute, and Switzerland equalised late, giving Qatar a point.

The tournament opened with a spectacular ceremony at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, featuring a multicultural musical showcase. Pop stars and Latin legends such as Shakira, Burna Boy, Tyla, J Balvin, Danny Ocean, Belinda, Lila Downs, Maná and Los Ángeles Azules performed, while traditional Mexican Papel Picado décor set the stage. Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio made history by issuing three red cards, matching the record for most dismissals in a World Cup match.

On the field, the opening fixture saw Mexico defeat host nation South Africa 2‑0, and South Korea beat the Czech Republic 2‑1.
