World Cup 2026 spurs large‑scale police raids on gambling ring in Vietnam and drone crackdowns in the US

Vietnamese police dismantled a nationwide online gambling network that exploited the World Cup 2026 to run football betting, lottery and number‑betting schemes. Over 26 suspects, including alleged ringleader Vũ Quang Minh and manager Lý Hoàng Oanh, were arrested after coordinated raids at 11 locations in Ho Chi Minh City, Cần Thơ and An Giang. Authorities seized 50 mobile phones, a laptop, an iPad, US$10,000, 20 million VND in cash and extensive digital records, uncovering the use of Telegram bots, dedicated websites and betting apps.

In the United States, the FBI reported seizing more than 700 drones that violated temporary flight‑restriction zones during the World Cup 2026, with 59 drones confiscated in Los Angeles alone. Working with the Department of Homeland Security, the agency cited the rapid growth of civilian drone use as a new security challenge for large‑scale events, emphasizing that most violations were inadvertent but still posed serious safety risks. The crackdown is part of broader preparations for upcoming events such as the Super Bowl and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
