U.S. President Donald Trump is reported to be promoting FIFA president Gianni Infantino as the next secretary‑general of the United Nations, according to the New York Post. Trump described Infantino as “respected worldwide” and “able to bring people together,” citing the close relationship they forged while co‑organising the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The current UN chief, António Guterres of Portugal, will step down at the end of December 2026; a successor must first obtain the recommendation of the 15‑member Security Council – where the United States holds veto power – before being confirmed by the General Assembly. Infantino has not signaled any personal interest, and his candidacy would represent an unprecedented shift from a sports administrator to a top diplomatic role. Other potential candidates mentioned include former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet and IAEA director Rafael Grossi, both of whom could face regional opposition. If appointed, Infantino’s UN salary of roughly $418,000 would be far lower than his current FIFA earnings of about $6 million per year.
