2026 FIFA World Cup study finds massive unhealthy product advertising

A study conducted by researchers from the University of Bristol and the University of Oxford has revealed a massive presence of potentially harmful advertising during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Using the Isambard-AI supercomputer, the team analyzed 172.6 hours of live match footage across 104 games, identifying over 93,000 logos for products categorized as unhealthy food and drink, alcohol, gambling, prediction markets, and cryptocurrencies.

Unhealthy food and drink advertisements were the most prevalent, accounting for approximately 70 percent of the identified problematic logos. Major brands such as Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Powerade, and Lay’s were the most frequently appearing. Coca-Cola recorded the highest number of appearances with 21,893 logos. On average, nine problematic logos appeared every minute of live broadcast, or roughly one every 6.7 seconds.

The researchers noted that because these logos were embedded in the central international broadcast feed—such as on pitchside advertising boards—viewers could not avoid them without missing the match. This exposure occurred for nearly a quarter of the total live playing time. In response, FIFA stated that its revenue is reinvested into football projects, including health and wellbeing initiatives, and that all partners are subject to governance and compliance frameworks.
