World Cup Fuels Restaurant Changes in Argentina and Mexico
During the FIFA World Cup, Argentine-themed eateries in Mexico City reported higher foot traffic as fans gathered to watch matches. Eight venues ranging from upscale locations in Bosques de las Lomas to family‑friendly spots in Interlomas were highlighted, each offering screens and menu items such as carpaccio, steak and traditional parrilla dishes.
In Argentina, the opposite trend emerged: most supporters preferred viewing the games at home. Restaurants without televisions often remained closed, while those equipped with screens saw modest gains. Delivery volumes rose, with industry leaders noting, "Los locales que contaban con televisores pudieron aprovechar los partidos de Argentina, mientras muchos restaurantes y parrillas sin pantallas optaron por no abrir". The sector also warned of growing informality, estimating that 45% of activity operates outside the formal economy, posing competitive challenges for established businesses.
